What is announce?
Announce is a new method for publishing announcements to the University community.

How do I send an announcement to Announce?
Send your announcement as an email message to announce@udmercy.edu and/or
announce@students.udmercy.edu. Please include an expiration date for the announcement at
the bottom of the message (ie. Please post until 10/1/99)

Will my announcements get to all students/faculty at UDM?
Sending an announcement to announce@udmercy.edu will reach all employees of UDM. To reach
students you will need to send to announce@students.udmercy.edu.

Can I delete messages?
The ~announce/public mailbox that appears in your mailbox list is actually not stored in your account.
You are actually "looking into" the announce account to see this mailbox. That means you can not
actually delete these messages because they are not really stored in your mailbox. If you were to be
able to delete the message you would delete the message for everyone else as well. There will be
an 'announce' manager who will regularly delete messages that are no longer relevant.

How will messages be deleted?
There will be a person (or team of persons) who willregularly monitor the announce INBOX. There job
will be to move legitimate messages into the public folder so that they are available to the University
community. They will also remove messages that are no longer relevant (either based on the content
of the announcement or the requested expiration date of the announcement.)

Why don't you just allow us to send to all@udmercy.edu
There are a number of reasons. First, filling inboxes with general announcements is a very inefficient
use of resources. Second, allowing anyone to send a message to all users can have some very
negative consequences (ie. disgruntled employees/students sending volitile messages, propogation
of internal and external spam/junk mail, embarrassing accidental messages and reply to all messages
being delivered to all.)

What is all@udmercy.edu and all@students.udmercy.edu?
These accounts are used only for emergency messages. Only the system administrators have the
ability to send a message to all.
