Connecting to UDM from Home

Does the University provide dial up connections to the Internet?
UDM does not provide free or subsidized access to the Internet for faculty, staff, students, or administrators, we have arranged for good pricing through Merit Networks. For more information click HERE.

What if I need Internet access from home?
If you are interested in having Internet access from home there are a couple of options to consider.
High Speed Connection: You can get a high speed Internet connection through many local cable companies via a cable modem. You can get a high speed Internet connection through the phone company or an Internet Service Provider via a service called DSL (digital subscriber line.) You can also get a high speed connection to the Internet through a satellite connection via a company like DirectPC. The speeds of these connections are comparable to being on campus. The cost for these services usually start at around $40/month. A good resource for identifying a high speed provider in your area is www.dslreports.com.

Dial Up Connection: A lower cost solution is to use your standard phone lines to establish a dialup connection to the Internet. In order to accomplish this you will need a modem. This will not provide you with an “always on” connection but the price starts at free and goes up from there for a service like AOL.

Check with the individual internet service providers for prices. Companies that provide dial up connections to the Internet are usually referred to as ISPs (Internet Service Providers.) A good starting point for identifying an ISP is thelist.internet.com.
