TrialWare Software Versions: A Letter from Macromedia, Inc.

In recent months, we have received frequent questions as to whether trial licenses may be used to train students on Macromedia products. The Macromedia product family is used for creating digital communications - key products include Dreamweaver, used to create HTML content, the Flash Authoring tool for creating web based video and animations, and Fireworks for creating web graphics. Our products are most frequently used by teachers and students in Computer Science, Creative studies like multimedia and fine arts, Business, particularly Marketing, and Communications/Journalism.

A trial license may only be used to review, demonstrate and evaluate the software for purchase, not for instructional or training purposes. As always, we wish to avoid any confusion over appropriate licensing, and we appreciate your time taken in reading this clarification.

Trial licenses are not for sale and are provided to assist an individual in determining whether to purchase a licensed copy of Macromedia software. In addition, trial licenses are strictly prohibited from use for any instructional or training purposes.

Macromedia has recently encountered a number of situations in which an education institution, misunderstanding the terms of trial licenses, used a trial license in one of its student computer laboratories or actively instructed students to download the trial version to complete coursework. Although inadvertent, this placed the institution in the unfortunate situation of using the software outside of the license agreement.

Why UDM Does not purchase $499/$399/$299/$199/$99 Dell Computers
While at first glance it might seem like the way to go, the "$499/$399/etc..." deals fall far below our minimal UDM standards for the software used around the University and usually do not come with the warranty coverage we need to guarentee at least three years of usage.

Particularily for a lab computer or a faculty computer, warranty coverage is critical. These units are made cheaply with consumer quality parts and not corporate parts as you would expect. The "savings" by going cheap must be weighed against the internal UDM costs to develop images for systems deviating from our standard as well as the hardware support cost beyond the limited warranty period.

To upgrade one of these units to the UDM standard is typically more expensive than purchasing the UDM standard system at our specially negotiated price.
