The University of Detroit Mercy
ITS McAfee virus protection download and licensing information
McAfee Virus Protection is an anti-virus program
that scans and actively protects your computer from viruses,
worms, Trojan horses, spyware, adware and hybrid attacks.
For the benefit of UDM students and their personal computers,
the University is providing a 12 month license to help easily
manage infections and attacks on their computers.
What are the minimum requirements for installing
the program on my computer?
- Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
- 32 MB of RAM
- Minimum 38 MB free disk space
- Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
Why is it important to back up data files on my computer?
Before installation of McAfee Virus Protection Software
make sure to backup all important files on your computer
using either FTP or another file storage method. This is
essential because anytime you install new software there
is the chance that it may cause problems that affect your
computer negatively.
Regular backup of files should be a routine process for
all users.
Should I uninstall my other virus protection software?
Possibly. If you purchased a full-fledged virus protection package and
have it configured for active protection and daily updates you need not
install this new version.
If you have a trial version or shareware version of a virus protection application, please refer to the Uninstall instructions for the package installed on your computer.
Typically, you will use the Add/Remove Control Panel to remove the program.
Failing to un-install your existing virus protection before proceeding to install the new version may produce unexpected results.
It seems logical that running two virus protection programs on the same computer makes a safer computing environment. However, multiple virus programs step over each other and do not coexist well.
Where should I go to download the software?
http://it.udmercy.edu/av-license
Follow the link to the Anti-Virus download page. To honor our license agreement, our UDM McAfee Antivirus installer may only be downloaded from an on-campus, networked computer (this includes dorms.)

Why should I read and accept the license agreement?
Reading the license agreement explains the
lawful usage of the software. Once you have read the license
agreement
you must fill in your name and University email address,
then click "yes" to accept the agreement and continue the
installation.
If you choose not to accept the license agreement, you will not be allowed to download the application.
How do I install the McAfee VirusScan Protection?
Before proceeding, please note that the
virus protection is being distributed using a "silent" install
package. A silent install package will install the program,
automatically
upgrade, and configure the product to the preferred settings.
Specifically, the UDM silent install will configure McAfee
for daily, random updates, auto-scanning, and auto-cleaning
of your computer. If you leave your computer on, this will
happen at a random time during the day. If you turn your
computer off,
the update and scan will occur five minutes after the computer
has been turned on. Updates will only occur when the computer
is connected to the network. Users may change the frequency
through the Virus Console once installed.
To install the UDM Virus Protection Silent Install package:
- Save all open documents and close all open programs.
- Click Continue on the license page, and the file
download box will appear momentarily.

- Click Save, saving to your desktop is an easy way
to get to the software. Depending on the speed
of your computer it may take a few minutes
to download the software for installation.
- Once
the software installation has downloaded on your computer, double
click on the "McAfee 8.0i UDM" application
and a box will appear like this: Click Start.

- Next, double-click on Setup to begin the silent
download. The following screen will appear for the first minute
of the install process and the disappear.

- Setup
will install the software and will automatically restart your computer
once done
installing. In some rare instances a warning message
may be displayed regarding "logging" halfway through the silent install
which you should acknowledge to continue the installation
process.
- The entire installation will take between 10 and 15 minutes depending on your computer speed; do not restart your computer during the silent install process, it will
automatically restart once the installation is finished. Advanced users may wish to view the Task Manager tab to monitor the installation.
- After
the computer has restarted, McAfee VirusScan will automatically load
and begin
protecting your computer. This should be evident through
the "VShield" icon
in your taskbar.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 users may encounter a message stating Virus Protection has been changed or installed. In the
dialog box, please choose to confirm this is accurate when prompted.
- To keep your desktop clean, feel free to delete the 13 install files placed on your desktop during step 4. If you need to download the program again you may do so.
First Use after the Automatic Reboot
Your "first use" of the program should be to scan your
entire hard drive and clean any infected files that presently exist.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Right Click on the Vshield icon located on your systems tray.
- Click VirusScan Console.
- Right
Click on the "Scan All Fixed Disks" option and choose Start.
- If a virus is found it can be quarantined or deleted.
