Resident and Non-Resident Students
It is strongly advised for the protection of your data that
your system is equipped with up-to-date virus protection
(configured for daily updates) and up-to-date operating system
security patches (configured for daily updates). Unprotected
systems are highly susceptible to infection and often become
infected without any visible signs.
For all resident students, a hard-wired data connection
port is available in each room for network connectivity
For
students with WIFI capability, an open wireless environment
exists around the University. Please see http://it.udmercy.edu for
a map of covered areas.
Faculty, Staff and Administration
Complex
networking environments with multiple constituencies that
span across a metropolitan
area require strong oversight
to ensure the delivery of education and the operations of
the institution are reliable and efficient. To that end,
the faculty, staff and administration network is more tightly
governed than the student and open WIFI network. Connections
to the hard-wired network infrastructure are limited to University
owned equipment which meet the University’s hardware
standard and which are properly configured with the University’s
virus protection system and updated daily for all virus and
security patches.
Installation of any equipment on the network should be formally
requested through the http://helpdesk.udmercy.edu system
two weeks prior to use.
Please
note: equipment acquired under special circumstances such
as grants, donations,
etc. is
subject to meet the University’s
standards prior to connectivity. Not all donations are officially
accepted.
Any compromised system will be immediately disconnected
from the network. One compromised system can easily bring
all network connectivity down.
Under no circumstances is non-University equipment connected
to the network.
